Finding Hakkun's roots is virtually impossible. The paternal branch is totally unknown. All we know about his father is that he was an American soldier. After he left Korea, he sent some presents to Hakkun. But his name and address are unknown. Hakkun's maternal grandfather was a Chinese pharmacist who dealt in natural medicines. We know a little more about his maternal grandmother. She had a brother who married the woman we know as Halmoni. Hakkun was very close to her. She had a son and two daughters. The oldest daughter was Hakkun's best friend. Soon E refers to her as Hakkun's cousin. She is actually the first cousin of Hakkun's mother and thus Hakkun's first cousin once removed. Halmoni and her family are the only links Soon E has to any of Hakkun's family.
