The Essence of Lady Shin

신 사임당 / 오죽헌

The major milestones in Lady Shin's life:

Born in 1504, the second of four sisters. No brothers.

She was named Shin Yi-son.

Grew up on northeast coast of Korea in Gangneung, Gangwondo.

Schooled by her father in Confucian classics which emphasize:
    Value of knowledge
    Dedication to studies
    Respect for and care of parents

As she grew in her studies, her father gave her the name Sa-Im-Dang in honor of the mother of Ken Wen of China who was revered as a good mother and a good wife.

At age 19, married Yi Won-su from Paju, a town on the western side of Korea not far from Panmunjom and Seoul.

Had four sons and three daughters; oldest son was Yi I ( whose pen name was Yul-gok which means Chestnut Valley).

Created beautiful works of art: paintings, calligraphy, sewing, embroidery, poetry.

In the absence of brothers, cared for her aging parents.

Heavy load as mother, wife, daughter, and artist.

Died in 1551 at relatively young age of 47.

Yulgok was 15 at the time of her death.

Yulgok became a well-know Joseon scholar.

Along with Yulgok and other family members was buried at husband's home town of Paju on the western side of Korea.

Is also known as Eojin Eomeoni (어진 아머니: Wise Mother)

Role model for women of Korea for nearly 500 years.
